And from what (admittedy little) I know about the colonisation of Africa, that seems fairly benign. This may be because I'm currently reading King Leopold's Ghosts, where the King of Belgium managed to create a massive humanitarian disaster on a shockingly Hitlerian scale, including policies which included large quotas for rubber plantations, for which a sufficiently large amount of severed native hands could be a suitable substitute. Some of these people were killed for their hands, some were behanded while living, and at least one pretended to be dead while soldiers cut off his hand.
Imperial Germany’s extermination of the Herero people in Africa before the First World War quite foreshadowed the holocaust during the second. Exterminatory racial policy wasn’t introduced to Germany by Hitler.
