The alternative in this case was to be entombment by the pyroclastic flow - a dense mix of rapidly moving hot air and semi-molten rock dust at several hundred degrees Celsius. The death in that case would also be instantaneous.
I am guessing the stone spared this men of the death by molten rock by several seconds at most.
