Or know our history and want to bring it back.

I don't get how intentionally and provably enacting a horrifying and immoral policy that angered a majority of the people would be a "win" for them. Then again, there's a lot about Trumpeters that I don't understand.
But that's just it, isn't it? They aren't concerned at all about what a majority of people think, unless it blows up in their faces, as it did on this issue. Without the widespread outrage and protest, this would have been yet another of Trump's odious promises to his base made good. At least, that's how he would have spun it.
In Trumpworld, it's all about the base. He knows it. His team knows it. Unless he can keep delivering these so-called wins to the people who voted for him and keep them in a constant state of resentment, mean-spirited spitefulness, and schadenfreude, he'll never be able to generate enough support for his preferred mid-term candidates, let alone his re-election bid.
The worst among his supporters and possible congressional collaborators are the very people he needs to prevent his otherwise certain impeachment.
But that's sort of my point: they are so focused on their minority base and pandering to them that they didn't realize that kidnapping children and putting them in cages was going to upset the rest of the country? They actually thought that a majority of Americans would like this policy? Or thought that it wouldn't adversely effect them or turn people away from them?
Even granting that they're playing to their base to gin up support for mid-term candidates, how did they expect this to be a political win?
