I think they believed it would just disappear into the ether, along with the near-daily list of other outrages they commit.
There is something fundamentally wrong with Trump. He doesn't seem to think or to feel as most people do. It's a serious blind spot, and I suspect that's what led him to think this could somehow be a political win. Why would a demonstrated sociopath and flim-flam man consider the outrage people would feel about children who aren't their own when he is devoid of those feelings, himself?
