It isn't considered reverent to write the name of God (in any form) in a place where it may be destroyed. If, for instance, you write 'God' on a bit of paper and then burn it, you have desecrated the name of God. Spelling it out 'G-d' lets people know what you mean, but you've not actually written out the full name.
