It isn't considered reverent to write the name of God (in any form) in a place where it may be destroyed. If, for instance, you write 'God' on a bit of paper and then burn it, you have desecrated the name of God. Spelling it out 'G-d' lets people know what you mean, but you've not actually written out the full name.

It is widespread in some Muslim societies -including where I grew up-, that if a sheet of paper or a book has the name of God, you burn it so you don't desecrate it by throwing it in the garbage
But it's the first time I know about the Jewish custom; so thanks.
Probably the Islamic Sunni/Shiite burning papers that has the name of God in it, is because of "inverting the Jewish and Christian habits"; so if a jew prays wearing a shoe, you pray barefoot; and so on.
