Why are the words of god so ignorant and confusing that they can be mistranslated? Or have multiple translations?
A christian lady the other day said that when god told the chosen to kill all of the canaanites what he really meant was that the chosen should give up all their defects of character. WTF!
There is metaphors but in this case, the context in Arabic is needed for much words like the ones derived from wilayah, like Wali, Awliya, Mawla, because all it means really is there is a relationship between the two. Sometimes it refers to that of love, sometimes alliance, sometimes helper/guardian, sometimes it refers to Authority and sometimes that of leadership and sometimes that of submitting to authority and leadership.
In the context of the verse he mentioned, it definitely refers to authorities and in particular, it had to do with authority of the religious type, not even of the political here. The only reason why it's not translated like that is because the issue of the Authority of the leaders of guidance would become obvious to those reading the translations.
