Well, then this may be of interest. My sister moved to Germany back in the nineties. She formally left the catholic church thusly.
She wrote a nice letter to her local bishop self describing herself as an atheist, which she was, and wanted to be delisted as a member. An interview was arranged with said bishop and job done. It probably didn't help that in Germany a tithe is deducted from your paycheck at source. That really pissed her off.
So it was easy to do. However, the good old hierarchy of cross dressing perverts cottoned on to the fact that they were hemorrhaging both members (important for the publicity machine) and tithes (important for the pocket) so what were they to do? They changed canon law to make it far more difficult to leave, that's what they did.
