You are absolutely correct both as far as the dogma goes. Where does the notion that the immaculate conception applies to jesus come from? I don't know. Protestant propaganda, perhaps? Ignorance, maybe?
Wherever the origin, while I am an atheist myself, catholics believe a lot of things, but that one is pure invention. While I might happily disagree fundamentally with catholicism, it is stupid to attribute to them a claim that they have never made in any way shape or form.
