Harmless snakes tend to have narrower heads and no obvious "neck". This one looks like it has a wide head and a clear neck, that's a clear sign of venomous vs non.
In any case, better safe than sorry and animal control is your best bet!
Yep, we have rattlesnakes here in CA. My daughter (who also likes reptiles!!) and I have been to a nature center - they told us that venomous snakes have angular instead of narrow heads because that's where the venom is. I can't tell the shape of OP's snake's head from the photos, though.
Fun fact: I sorta like snakes too. We found one in the middle of a bike trail recently, I tried to pick it up and move it so it wouldn't get murdered by a passing bicyclist but it reared up at me when I got close. So we decided not to touch it.

Yeah, drunk guy in Oz tried picking up a snake on the side of the road a few years ago.
I think he used up all the anti venom in the state and lost a couple of limbs.
