We've had this debate in the past. The problem with reducing it to "views" is that this could potentially mean anything; political views, social views, etc.
The point of using the word "religious" isn't to suggest that the views held by that person are religious in nature, but more than they are their views on religion, or at least the ideas of religion (God, etc). Agnosticism atheism is a view on the nature and existence of God, and therefore is a view on religious ideas, and hence a "religious view".
