Given what is riding on this being legitimate, I'm confident that someone in the Times Op-Ed department thought to wonder, Guys, do you think it might just be a low-level wannabe?
You can indulge your cheap and selective skepticism if you wish, but when the Times takes such an extraordinary step as to publish this piece and publicly states that the author, known to them, is a senior-level administration official, I doubt they got it wrong.
