Appending posts together is automatic behavior. There is no way around that other than to wait for the two hour edit window to expire. Sometimes a post gets split from the previous one if either is particularly long or will start a new page, but as far as I can see, that's unpredictable.
One can preferentially force source mode. In "User CP" go to "edit Options" and tick "Put the editor in source mode by default".
Weirdly, as a programmer, I don't have it ticked myself, too many wasted hours on UI considerations, I guess.
