<shrug> I find this intriguing because it seems like a lot of the critiques of Atiyeh stem from the fact that he's 90 years old, and historically most mathematicians make their major discoveries in their early years -- 20s and 30s.
Personally I don't have any problem with the idea that an old fart mathematician might make a major contribution to the field now and then -- "very low probability" isn't exactly the same as "never happens".
I am skeptical, however, based on the number of attempts which have been made -- and failed -- to prove RH, to date.
If he has proven it, this could have major ramifications for cryptology, data security, and privacy.
