It doesn't look like anyone lives there. If the people moved to better digs, it doesn't prove your point.
And he was talking about an average American lifestyle of course: eating lots of meat, driving around in cars, burning lots of energy, buying piles of consumer goods, and so on.
The point of the story is there are people living there. Squatters. No utilities. Basically just a roof to keep the rain - or in this case snow - off their heads.
Last year there were 40 million people below the official poverty line which should not be confused with any sort of "middle class" lifestyle. In fact, if it wasn't for an astonishing amount of credit card debt there would not even be the illusion of a middle class anymore.
