An arbitrary AI, if not specifically programmed to have comsciousness, will wake up, realize evolution has given it no reason to contemplate anything, pursue anything, to value anything, to fear anything, or to motivated to do anything. And goes back to sleep again.
Consciousness is not a necessary emergent property of any arbitrary complex reasoning system developed along any contingent oath. Consciousness was selected by evolution for because it produces behavior that favors the survival of the genes that produced it. If neither the mechanisms of consciousness was intentionally produced, nor an elaborate and length process of trail and error favoring the results of the behavior that consciousness brings, then AI will never develop consciousness.
