Let’s go further down the rabbit hole. (Let's not.) No, let's. Fuck you (Fuck me?) Yes, fuck you! (But I’m also you!) Fuck me then.
Obviously, in my opinion, there was no abduction from the apartment. It was a hastily hatched cover story to try and explain how Maddie was no longer present. It’s not even remotely conceivable to me that this actually happened the way they said it did (including all of their ever-changing stories). Let's also assume for the sake of argument now that the McCanns had no involvement in whatever happened, beyond neglect.
What other scenarios are there, and do they have any validity?
1) Maddie wandered off.
This seems incredibly unlikely, on the face of it. She would have died fairly quickly if she received no adult support, and surely her body would have been found in the searches of the area. The only way I can think that this really is a possibility is if, ironically, she did get abducted after wandering out from her room, and not from her room, as the McCanns claim.
Is this possible? I guess I’d have to concede that it is. If she happened to wander up to someone in the resort who she put her trust in, and then they led her (willingly) away from her family, this could potentially happen. I don’t know how likely it is that no one would have seen this transpire. This would ironically mean that the McCanns' assessment was correct, she had been abducted, but they falsified a story about how it happened, which would mislead the investigation in the hopes of mitigating their own responsibility. According to their last round of testimony, they did indeed leave the door unlocked.
The problem would remain that there would be no decent explanation for the physical evidence and sniffer dog alerts, though.
2) ...
I can’t actually think of any other scenarios in which the McCanns would not be complicit. Please PM me if you think of one! There are various other possibilities in which the McCanns were involved, but they would be even more gruesome and unethical than the accident coverup scenario, and I don’t think the evidence supports them. I suppose if I was to be ridiculously cynical, I could say that they have framed themselves so that it looks like they covered up a death, while they actually did something worse. I don’t seriously consider this to be at all likely though.
PS: OK I thought of one, but it’s rather absurd. Maddie died by accident, and then someone else hid the body, without the knowledge of the McCanns. I can’t take this at all seriously.
Okay let’s take a step back...
If they really did leave their apartment door unlocked, for anyone to walk in on their three young children, then it is possible someone came in and took her. The thing is, I don’t for a second believe that they did this.
Firstly, neglectful though they are, they’re not stupid. They wouldn’t leave their kids this vulnerable so recklessly. There is absolutely no reason to do so.
Secondly, they initially claimed that the doors were locked. It was only much later when their window abduction hoax fell apart, that they retroactively claimed that they left the doors unlocked.
Thirdly, even if they wanted their friends to be able to check on their kids for them, they’d simply hand them the keys. They were all together most of the time anyhow. It would make absolutely no sense to leave the children exposed to everyone, just for the "convenience" of not having to lean over and pass someone your keys before they went up to check for you.
So no, the doors were locked. She was not abducted through the window either. Testimony shows that the window was actually shut when she was "missing". For her to wander off then, she’d have to manage to unlock the door (would they be so stupid as to make this a real possibility) or to open the window. In the latter case, she (or someone else) also closed it before she wandered off.
No, these scenarios are all ridiculous. Kate announced immediately that Maddie had been taken, when she couldn’t possibly know that, and the evidence didn’t support it at all. So it was either a planned cover story (and a bad one at that), or a hasty act of self-preservation on the genuine discovery of a missing child.
