again moron you are describing chattel slaves. There were and are different levels of slavery. For example the passage this whole thread is about speaks to the rules of non chattel slaves. these slaves were their own people but pledged time and work in exchange for a debt or property or livestock. There was a time limitation on this form of slavery therefore not owned.. more like leased, and yes even chattel slaves were compensated. For good work they got good food for good workers they wre given wives, single family homes/shot gun shacks ect..
Skilled slaves were well compensated not always as much as a free counter part, but alot more than an unskilled slaves was paid. most made enough to buy their own freedom..

Not all slaves where chattel this may have been true on the mega plantations but for most family farms a slave = a years wage so they were prized and well taken care of. why because you could work this man 5 years get your money back when he buys himself out and turn the money back into a newer younger man.
