Um yes and no. Technology has made it so we don't have to rely on horses to send mail by the Pony Express, and I agree that is a good thing. But greed has at the same time kept oil company CEOs in denial that their product by burning it is damaging the planet.
I don't know about you but the planet is not more than a rock for me. Don't get me wrong I think nature offers us a sense of beauty and joy but I value our species more, and I agree that we should do things smarter and that we should try not to inflict more suffering than is necessary but we should also try to diminish the influence of emotions over our decisions, to keep the eye on the ball in a way.
As for petroleum, there is no way that we could have known the consequences of petroleum on this planet, and the CEOs, after all we are all emotional beings not just rational but togheter we can diminish our shortcomings and strive for progress.
Edit: Let's not forget that we almost erased famine in just 2 centuries.
