Even outside the issue of religion or politics, I was as a teen a follower. I did really stupid and sometimes dangerous shit just because I wanted to fit in.
Humans, especially youth, when they feel bullied or abandon or abused, can be very easily conned into doing things they wouldn't if they had good family/societal support.
In America, boys/men join the KKK or biker gangs or street gangs, for the exact same reason vulnerable people joined Jim Jones and Heaven's Gate.
Even the few that escaped The Branch Davidians in Waco regretted joining after the fact.
GENDER IS NOT THE ISSUE. The issue is the cons convince vulnerable females or males into following. Just like I was convinced by assholes as a teen to follow them.
