There's a difference between joining a political affiliation and between taking the field against your own nation's soldiers or those of allies. You can say whatever terrible thing you want about the US (or the UK or whatever). But as soon as you pick up a gun with the intent to harm your nation's interests, you are, in fact, a traitor-- and while you might think your treachery has value (like you think the US is a country of capitalist pigs, say, or Christian heretics), you should have no expectation of anything but the worst possible punishments if you are ever brought under that nation's control.
"Oh, I made a mistake. I accidentally supported an organization that has murdered thousands in the name of Allah, and which has as its express goal the downfall of all Western civilization. Forgive me bro-- I was just pranking!"
As far as I'm concerned, traitors should be strapped naked to the front of minesweepers.
