University Of The Third Age

Yeah, pretty grandiose name.
I was just wondering if you have anything like it in your country:
'The Third Age' refers to people over 50.
A voluntary organisation, my centre gets help from the government in being allowed to use a decommissioned school. There are several centres around the city.
How it works: During a year there are usually around 200 short courses on offer. All teaching is voluntary, but we have a few retired university lecturers ,so some of the courses are of a very high quality.
To give a course, you need 10 people who are interested. Membership is $40 a year. That gives you up to eight courses. Last year I attended an art group for about 6 months for my $40. They have a coordinator/teacher, so I learned some stuff . Formal art classes were costing me $65 a week for two hours in a class of seven.
Having an interest is very important to older people, especially if they are alone. This simple fact is recognised by our Federal Government. It is government policy to keep people in their own homes for as long as possible. Not only are they usually a lot happier, but it also saves a great deal of money. (All aged care facilities receive some government subsidy)
