Well the news media has not done a good job of pointing out that he forfeited his bail and plead. It is not true that he was not punished. The "dropped charges" were after the fact. He has to do community service and his charges only get dropped if he refrains from any criminal activity for a period. If he commits another crime within the stated period, the charges could be brought back.
That is a common punishment for first time offenders.
If we want to argue was that appropriate or not, that would be a different subject and a better one to argue. I think he got off easy.
