Well, that was just awful. But that's a single incident for a single reason - terrorism. From 2001 through 2018, there have been less than 4000 USians killed as a result of terrorist attacks. In 2016 alone, there were more than 14000 firearms homicides in the US.

Interesting take away from that link. In 2016, the total number of homicides in the US was 19362. The number of homicides committed with firearms was 14415. This seems to mean that just over 74% percent of homicides in the US involved firearms (this number specifically EXcludes suicides or accidents).
