Hmm... depends on how you view theism and atheism relative to the historical period. Today's theism is a lot different to the pagan 'theism' that was around before the 'axial age' when cultures shifted towards the idea of 'god' actually intervening in human affairs rather than being a reflection of what was happening in human life (there's a lot more to it, obv!) There was a lot of flux before monotheism as such became established. It's a large and interesting topic.
Somewhat true -- in the beginning, there was only animism, which later evolved into polytheism (which was, technically, paganism), and then theism; after that came deism followed by agnosticism, and, finally, atheism.
