Anyone who reads and appreciates Greek myths knows that Greek myths are so poignant precisely because they are metaphors that match up with reality (pretty well sometimes). Even the Ancient Greeks knew this. Perhaps even the ancient Israelites knew this. The only ones stupid enough to actually take God literally may be Christian fundamentalists.

I don't see the ancient Jews as delusional. They wrote what they were allowed to write. If they had written something like, "Maybe Yahweh doesn't really exist," they would have been dragged into the middle of the village and stoned to death. I'm sure that plenty of ancient Jews knew that the Yahweh schtick was a line of bullshit. But (since they were averse to having a bunch of rocks thrown at them) they elected not to publish their views.
