What you appear to be forgetting is that the "progressive vote" is split between more than one candidate this time (it's the most crowded Democratic field there ever been). As more people drop out, people become more engaged with the 2020 race and the name renegotiation of candidates who aren't Joe Biden goes up you will see the poll numbers shift dramatically. An Economist/YouGov Poll came out yesterday actually, that had Joe Biden up nationally by just 3%. Combined, the progressives are polling at a greater percentages than Joe Biden. I reckon we could be seeing deals done for delegates at the convention given the crowded nature of the field.
I would also urge you to look at the polling for the 2008 Democratic primaries. Obama didn't start beating Hilary in the polling average until February of 2008. We all know who the nominee was. Hopefully this time the DNC won't be as corrupt in tipping the scales in favour of one candidate as they did in 2016.
