Early civilizations tended to grow up in the flood plains of rivers. Since not every river valley civilization was fortunate enough to have a nice, well-behaved river like the Nile, local floods could be unpredictable and devastating. The ultimate origin of the Flood narrative could very well have been some quick-thinking Sumerian who managed to get both of his goats on a raft before they were swept away. And it’s interesting that the epic of Gilgamesh predates the Noah myth by at least a thousand years but it’s the Noah’s ark story that people still claim is the original.
It’s like the moron Kirk Cameron claiming that the pagan holiday traditions adopted by Christianity were actual originally stolen by the pagans from Christians.
