It sounds to me like some level ones then became level threes:
The moon was split into two pieces while we were with the prophet in Mina. He said "Be witnesses" then a piece of the moon went towards the mountain.

Sorry, but your sense free rationalisation shows that the moon splitting legend is itself senseless.
