The thing that blows my mind about this, as far as the faithful twisting their scrotums into knots to defend it... is that it would be awfully simple to just acknowledge that the hell nonsense in our magic books is human revenge and murder porn.  

God didn't write that shit, god doesn't do that shit.  God doesn't require any defense for things it doesn't do.  God doesn't run Gitmo.  

Is that not an option for you, Atlas?  Are you or your god really just one bad plate of shrimp away from flat out torturing a motherfucker on alleged cause?

In order to do that, they'd have to admit that their holy book is not the perfect, divinely inspired word of god. That not only did Humans write it, but they made grave errors that their god didn't correct. They would rather try to tone it down, than get rid of it. Hell isn't always quite as bad as drowning and burning in a lake of fire for all eternity. Slavery back then somehow wasn't as bad as slavery in US history. Genocide is ok because those people were sacrificing Humans to their god, and our god totally never did the same thing. Or any other horrible acts Humans committed, and wrote in their books.
