I owned 5 dobies from '84 - '96. I sold 4 litters, save two boys I kept, a total of 26 pups. Six of the owners either kept me updated or sent a note of appreciation for the dog. They were very loyal and loving companions who never attacked anyone. It made them nervous when people showed fear because they didn't see themselves as something to fear. They were certainly protective and thought their job was to roam a perimeter, which is what they relentlessly did.
On the trail, they ran ahead 50 yards, circled back around through the woods, and caught up. The only time one hurt me or anyone, was when Crunch, a ninety pounder, as he ran by, clipped me behind the left knee and sent me to the ground.
Scarlet did bite a 5 y/o on the upper arm. Adam was a solid swimmer, but she didn't know that. So when he jumped in the lake and went under, she jumped in and pulled him out. She left marks but no cuts.
Dobies spare their owners the long, slow decline of, say, a lab. They burn fast and die young. Dogs are better than people. People are the problem.
