When I was a kid, I used to - every so often - see a giant demon-spider crawl slowly across the ceiling of my bedroom. Terrifying.

Then the elm outside my window died, Da cut it down, and the spider went away.

I wasn’t aware of Shelob at that point in my life. I wasn’t even aware of the Mirkwood spiders.
