I read that nearly everyone has at least one experience of "sleep hallucination" or "sleep paralysis" in their lifetime

It happened to me twice after a physician put me on medication which blocks serotonin which i never wanted to take anyway
Interestingly the psychedelic known as LSD or acid works by changing your levels of serotonin as well, causing hallucinations

The first night I kept getting woken up by either a loud bang or having my name yelled out.
I later learned that this is known as "exploding head syndrome". It's not as disturbing as the name suggests but could definitely cause one to believe there was a ghost or something

The following night as ive gone to get out of bed to go to the toilet there is an image of an old man sitting beside my bed, looking at me, face to face just about
Like WTF, I ran out of my room screaming. It definitely wasn't a dream and the image i saw was as clear and defined as the images we see
It really freaked me out

The on the next night just as I was falling asleep I see a glowing blue orb hovering and dancing above my bed... WTF... Again i ran out of my room screaming

What the fuck is wrong with me i thought.
I know people with psychosis have audio hallucinations but i seemed to have skipped that and gone straight into visual hallucinations.
I've hallucinated before when taking psychedelic drugs, more intensely as well. But the sleep hallucinations were different.
It was a random image in a normal backdrop but most of all it was totally unexpected

But thanks to the internet I was able to find these scientific explanations for it which was such a relief cos i thought i was loosing my mind
I learnt that changes in serotonin levels can cause these types of parasomnias and went to tell my physician that im getting off this drug

It was really a dangerous medication to be subscribing for someone who is just sad over a close family death.
Feeling depressed during such an occasion is normal. But she misdiagnosed it as depression
Extreme side effects of this drug where things like stroke, suicidal thoughts, worse depression, a different mental issue, hallucinations

Before we had these scientific explanations for these phenomena a person would be left with really no other explanation but to think it was a ghost or something
It was really easy to pass off the orb as a spirit and the old man as God if i was so inclined, which i guess is what people would have thought after having such experiences.
Sleep paralysis is the most extreme parasomnia. Some peoples experiences are a literal living nightmare

I just thought id share that. People might make judgements about my sanity but i don't care.
Hopefully someone can relate or even be made aware of such parasomnias being a possible explanation of ghosts

I should think nearly everyone has had hallucinations of the sorts you describe.

Boru

Nah.

My hallucinations are far more interesting.

They involve a chainsaw, an acid bath, Iggy, and a rabbit named Mr Sputnik.

"You did WHAT?  With WHO?  WHERE???"
