Outside Pearl Harbor, America had not only been attacked, but briefly invaded on our own soil.
The Aleutian Islands as part of the Alaskan territory, were briefly occupied by the Japanese.
And also true, while everyone knows Germany attacked Britain, they too briefly occupied outer islands under British rule.
Don't get into semantics here. Territories are still considered part of the overall country. Alaska didn't become a state until 1959. But it was still considered American land in WW2. Hawaii also was not a state when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, but both were at the time, considered American soil.
Just like Puerto Rico today should be a state, but isn't. It pays all the taxes the rest of America does, but doesn't have the same level of say a state does vs a territory.
Even Darwin Australia was once bombed by the Japanese in WW2.
