I think Macron's issue is more religious separatism than religion. He's objecting to French Islamic society creating a state within a state.

I can agree to that if Macron didn't receive hard hits from Turkey concerning his military expansions in Africa and Syria:

In July 2020, Macron called for sanctions against Turkey for the violation of Greece's and Cyprus' sovereignty, saying it is "not acceptable that the maritime space of (EU) member states be violated and threatened."[238] He also criticized Turkish military intervention in Libya.[239][240] Macron said that "We have the right to expect more from Turkey than from Russia, given that it is a member of NATO."[241]

So he began hitting Turkey in the point giving it its influence and popularity: Islam.
Macron has many bigger issues to worry about than Islam; the protests of the Yellow Vests + the upcoming French elections can say pretty much that the man is facing a big crisis internally; and wants to present himself as the French patriot to the masses.

i.e he is creating a fight out of the blue to engage in and win the next elections. And in that madness he even shook hands with Putin.

French participation in the air strikes in Syria were both legal and justifiable (not sure what you mean by his expansions in Africa).

Macron won’t have much trouble presenting himself as a patriot - he IS a patriot, albeit in a DeGaullist sort of way. He does what he does for the good of France.
