I don't think he ever intended himself to be the center of attention. I don't even think he ever imagined he was going to be found. I think he wanted the act to be the center of attention and his presence was simply a means to kill himself while he was at it. Alternatively, He may have wanted to be found but his identity remains a mystery. To be famous through the mystery of who he was.
