He provided proof that he was the bomber, the larger bones survived the blast. Edge back from the absurd.

The question is did he do it by intent or did he overestimate the power of the bomb.

At best, he might have gotten cold feet at the last second and tried to flee. But if that were the case there would have been witnesses to his fleeing and or being caught on camera. Investigators said he committed suicide, and part of them saying that was because they saw nobody exit the vehicle. Odds are, even upon initially looking into the vehicle, one could easily hide in the back knowing without a bomb squad being there, cops were not about to try open any windows or doors in case those were rigged as well. 

At this current point the mundane reality is saying that he blew himself up without leaving the vehicle.
