One of the subs, in addition to his hard hat and work duds, worn a full compliment of very femanine looking make-up, and maybe he got a couple second looks but overall no one cared. Working class people are like that. Live and let live.
In about 1986, on a lovely spring day, I was walking on a cross street on the upper east side of Manhattan, near the Metropolitan Museum. Nobody else was around except two guys fixing a hole in the sidewalk -- potbellied hard hat types sweating and cursing.
Then a slim lovely young man swooped by on roller blades. He had on a pink tank top and matching short shorts -- very tight. He saw us but looked away, expecting comments. The two guys in the sidewalk stopped working to watch him glide by. When he was past, they looked at each other and I thought, "Oh boy, here it comes."
One of them said, "Man, I wish I could do that." And the other one said, "Yeah."
