Friend or foe, unfortunately the truth is that both are always going to try to move to what either think are advantages. Russia tried to tackle Afghanistan too, and even today China is looking at our exit as an opportunity.
I said earlier that America seems far too much stuck on it's WW2 high win, but since, has made quagmires out of North Korea, Viet Nam, Iran and Afghanistan. I think "stay out of it" is a very over simplification in all cases.
Power vacuums are always going to have competing factions that attempt to fill those voids, BOTH FRIEND AND FOE.
So I think it is wrong to over simplify solutions with "us vs them".
If you want to argue we never should have invaded Afghanistan in the first place. I am 100% with you. But we still could have killed Bin Laden with a drone without spending 20 years on the ground.
