Their overriding motivation is to stop white genocide, which they believe is being perpetrated by the us government. When they believe that the us government is on the site of the white man, it;s flags and hats and ra ra ra - and when they believe it's literally anything other than or less than that - treason.
They're not nationalists. They're racists.
I think that applies to a segment of conservatism, but hardly all. The base which is responding has more common elements than just race. Though Haidt also points out that purity is also higher among conservatives. Purity and group loyalty are dangerous values to have in a pluralistic society.
