We hit afghanistan because afghanistan was harboring bin laden and refused to give him up.  Cheney...wanted to hit iran, bush the younger wanted to hit iraq.

Actually, not quite right. The Taliban refused to give him up directly to the USA. They were willing to capture him and turn him over to either Turkey or Kazakhstan at the behest of the USA, and neither of those two countries were unhappy about then turning over bin Laden to the US authorities (albeit possibly after significant torture, but given what the US later did to innocent Afghans, they wouldn't have been worried about this).

Even the invasion of Afghanistan had little to do with bringing a mass-murdering criminal to justice, and more to do with a limp dicked warmonger power trip (you can make your own mind up about who in the Shrub junta had the limp dick, my money is on all of them).
