External SSDs are a premium; you'd be better off with just a regular USB external hard disk for backing up stuff. I prefer Western Digital My Book series, but the Elements or Easystore or other basic Western Digital external hard drive would probably work just as well. Seagate would be a second choice. Look on Amazon and check the price history using camelcamelcamel to get an idea of how much they should cost. I'll link an example. You'll still need a hard disk to replace the ailing hard disk if that disk is dying.
This is at a decent price right now. Being on the smaller side, the price per gigabyte is higher than for larger drives, but I suspect 4 TB is more than you need.
