I think that I've spotted the source of your confusion.

Atheism: The lack of belief in a god or gods.

Note the complete lack of any statement about any other beliefs. The soul is not god. The afterlife is not god. So an atheist can have any or no belief in either of these without contradiction.

I remember this one atheist who believed in heaven via some very poorly explained notion revolving around an infinitely large multiverse containing the ideal planet for you and your brain quantum resonating with that planet at the moment of your demise. Don't ask me to explain it, he was clearly abusing words that had never done a single thing to harm him. He was a nit wit but he was still an atheist and I say that as somebody who'd have gleefully excommunicated him if I could have.

Do atheists believe things? Sure they do. They just don't believe in god.

Yes, there are many sects of atheism.

Cute atheists are those who think theists lack evidence, 

Less cute atheists think there is positively no God (100% certainty).

Then you have militant atheists who go out and actively preach their lack of belief

and then, at the Pol Pot level, atheists rigorously apply natural selection to entire populations.
