The fear of "if I'm wrong and there is a god, I'm going to hell" is insidious. However, consider this:
1) If there were a god, how do you know it accepted your promises, or even cares? What can you promise an omni-everything god anyway?
2) If there were a god, it would know exactly why you don't believe. If it punishes you for that, its a dick.
The bible god is bad fiction. The OT version is a tribal war god, and the NT version is an extortionist -- "believe in me or else!".
