Some scholars have claimed that the Noah myth was lifted from the Sumerian Epic Of Gilgamesh.
My take is that until quite recently***, we the people had no idea of the size of the earth. Perhaps something like this: 3500, your village and all the fields are flooded. You go to the top of the highest hill or tree. Water as far as you can see. You conclude that the entire world is flooded. Many cultures have flood myths.
Cherry on top: The Torah is/was claimed to have been written by Moses. That's unlikely, what with him almost certainly never having existed and all.
The Torah is the mythology of Judaism. That means they made it up. It was written down ca 500-300 bce
***Before the industrial revolution, the majority of human beings were agrarian. Most never travelled further than 20 miles from their home, ever.
Ignorant and illiterate, imo such people would be incapable of grasping the concept of distance of thousands of miles.
