Here Xmas is in December, which is in summer. Temperatures of 35C (90F) are not uncommon. Most Aussies are over the hot Xmas lunch. Cold buffets are the thing. Sis and I will begin with a prawn (shrimp) salad, then cold Turkey, ham and a bunch of salads. Desert is hot (store bought) individual Xmas puddings, served with the best quality vanilla ice cream I can get my hands on. Can't be arsed making more than couple of side dishes. Neither of us possess the appetite or the digestive system we once did.
Growing up I saw snow once; in the Adelaide Hills, it was a patch about 6 feet across. Have seen snow falling once; In the Italian Alps in 1985.
Just to show how perverse Australia can be; The Australian Alps receive more snow than Switzerland.
"Not only does it snow but we get more snow than Switzerland does in an average year. The spectacular and distinctive Australian Alps extend over 1.6 million hectares of public land contained in eleven national parks and nature reserves across Victoria, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory."
