I cannot understand how some Christians get the idea, it is okay to give some "play money" as a tip to a waiter who is working for a low wage and could be considered poor.
Because Jesus is quoted in the Gospels saying things that you should sell your possessions and give the proceeds to the poor. Likewise he says you cannot be his disciple unless you give away your earthly possessions, not to mention you will pile up treasure in heaven if you get rid of your earthly treasure.
Also the epistle of James talks about how a person's faith is false, unless he does acts like giving money to the needy. Not to mention in one of the parables of Luke (Chapter 14) you will be repaid at the resurrection for inviting the poor, disabled and other outcasts when you are throwing a feast.
