That we eat and drink and breath of out the same orifice practically guarantees that some portion of us suffocate every year just trying to satisfy our biological needs. Both living creatures and machines can be faulty or spoofed. It's not a requirement of utility, biological or otherwise - that a system be impervious to fault or even that it's normal operation isn't associated with risks. It's hard to get to the bottom of the ocean for pearls, it's not exactly safe to mine gold. Crash diets can kill, negative ideations can be debilitating....don't even get me started on beauty products and rituals....
You're back to epiphenomenalism, category B - but neither of us believes that items in category B possess utility because we've defined that category by it's complete lack of any ability to effect an outcome. It still remains the case that some things..and yes..even this thing, seem like category A. The ability of a creature to actively locate a mate is advantageous - though, sure, it can be faulty, it can be spoofed, it can be risky. Most plants are stuck hoping to blow into them on the wind, also works.
Maybe a hammer has no utility, in fact, because it doesn't always drive the nail and in some cases, smashes your finger instead in the attempt?

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
