I agree that these people would be exactly who they are regardless of their religion. I disagree that this "is not islam, as such". Islam is nothing if not the actions and ideals of muslims. There's nothing else to religion but the people who follow it. It's a tool that justifies whatever someone was going to do or be regardless. Muslims make islam, islam does not make muslims.
