My wife loves the stuff, and has her whole life. With her, it's all about the "crunch" sound that some foods make upon eating.
She'll eat plain rice cakes, too, because of the crunch. I swear, she'd eat cardboard, if I could somehow make it crunch between her teeth.
She didn't bat an eye when I told her what pork rinds are made of. (She didn't know, until she was ~50 years old.)
I think it would be easy to replace rice cakes with little rounds of styrofoam. I tied to knack on rice cakes some years back but even the so called flavored ones...weren't.
Did you try them on the parrot? Can't be much worse than eggshell cornbread.
